I Have read the documentation but I'm still lost! Can someone please show me the door how to tell google the pages that matter most via "canonical". Thank you.

yeah i would like to add the canonical stuff directly because google is killing me softly with penalties etc. but where do i start?
and yes I will do a fresh test instal as you mentioned.
but at 59 years old it just takes me 3x longer to figure things out, back in 1998 with my note pad i was flying, but now i stop using the notepad and tara welcome to arastta.... but im lost???? darn. -

Maybe you found a bug, if you can recreate it on a fresh install, using default/second template. If so you can report it as a issue at GitHub. -

It's then set by the system automatically, and you don't need to (or can) set anything manually.
Check your site source code in browser to see how they are used live.
