Wanting to personalise the maintenance mode login screen, if I do how will it be affected in subsequent updates? Will my code changes be wiped?

Hello Karl,
If you made any modification on "default" template then all modifications will be gone after the update.
You should use the override system for not loosing your modifications, here you can get info:
