Upgrade path from 1.5.6.4

I'd like to move an installation from 1.5.6.4, could you possibly advise on the best update route? The opencart 1 -> 2 migration tool on github is an absolute nightmare to use, the instructions are extremely badly written. Are there any alternatives?...
